Give me away

I'm writing today's blog from lovely Bristol! So a special hello to those of you reading nearby!

I wanted to write about the tradition of giving the bride away. As I mentioned in one of my first entries the tradition came from a time when the bride was seen as the property of her father and he would "give her" to her husband to be. It's now seen purely as a symbol of the fathers blessing.

I think the gesture is incredibly heartfelt and if the relationship between the bride and the person giving her away is strong it can be a brief but emotional moment.

Sadly the father of the bride is not always there to give the bride away, nor may she want him to.

There are lots of options for who give s the bride away. A mother, brother, sister, other family member or best friend may step in to take the place of the father. The bride may eleven choose to walk down the isle alone. Or perhaps even the family dog...

Whoever is chosen for this role is treasured by the bride. If you're ever asked to give someone away I hope you will feel honoured, loved and appreciated; because you will have been picked because of how much you mean to the bride.
